Interoperability in Europe – Made Real by Bluecode
Europe doesn’t need to start from scratch – we’ve already built it. Now it's time to scale it to a pan-European sovereign payment solution.
Europe’s payment sovereignty starts here
Long before it became a political priority, we at Bluecode understood that Europe must become sovereign in digital payments. We saw what dependence on non-European payment systems could mean – for consumers, merchants, banks, and even national resilience. That’s why we built Bluecode: an interoperable European payment network grounded in European values, privacy, and technology.
From Vision to Action: Founding EMPSA
To make interoperability a European reality, Bluecode took the initiative and helped found the European Mobile Payment Systems Association (EMPSA). Its goal: to connect existing national schemes across Europe, creating a pan-European payment ecosystem – independent, trusted, and secure.
Today, EMPSA brings together more than a dozen national payment systems, ensuring that payments made in one European country can be accepted in another — without relying on non-European infrastructures.

Proof of Concept: Interoperability Works
While others discuss concepts, Bluecode has already delivered. Over the past years, we have successfully proven interoperability between European payment systems in real environments – across borders, across institutions, across technical standards. Our system operates with:
European security and privacy standards
Real-time settlement capabilities
Full offline functionality for resilience
European Payment Interoperability at UEFA EURO 2024
At the UEFA EURO 2024, Bluecode proved that European payment interoperability isn’t a vision – it’s a fact. Together with Bancomat (Italy), Bluecode enabled live, seamless payments across networks and borders, demonstrating that a pan-European sovereign retail payment solution is not only possible – it’s already operational.
Fans, merchants, and visitors experienced in real time how a private-led, interoperable European payment system works: fast, secure, and sovereign.
Six Years Ahead – A Head Start Europe Needs
Bluecode has spent the past six years developing the legal, commercial, and technical foundation for a sovereign European payment infrastructure. This head start cannot be replicated overnight – and it’s precisely what Europe needs now.
Other European initiatives are just starting. Bluecode is already live, proven, and fully compliant with European rules. We don’t need to invent the solution. It exists.

We’re Live Across Europe
Bluecode is already enabling payments in multiple European countries, connecting banks, merchants, and consumers in a sovereign payment ecosystem. Each transaction demonstrates that European interoperability is not a vision of tomorrow – it’s a functioning reality today.

Expanding Europe's Reach - Globally
Our mission doesn’t end with Europe. We believe the world needs trusted payment technology built on European principles: privacy, openness, fairness, and innovation. Bluecode’s interoperable framework is designed to expand – allowing Europe to export its values, not import dependencies.

Europe’s interoperable future starts today
With current EU discussions on sovereign, private European payment solutions (see recent parliamentary amendments by the ECON Committee), the political vision aligns with what Bluecode has built for years. The market doesn’t need to start from scratch – it needs to scale what already works.
